A couple shots after skin cancer surgery #3 last week...basil cell...couldn't even really see it, that's what check-ups are for...go get one!!

Hoping the Cory Sees don't see this before they get here next Monday but it's a blanket I made for Baby Girl See due in late February/early March...love ragtime. Always wanted to lay out fabric to look like a jumbo gingham check...I think I got it!! (flannel back)

basil cell skin cancer

This is a picture of basil cell skin cancer.

It looks like an early manifestation to me as compared to the ones where you can see that it's traveled down the hair folicle and left a 'pit'.

Norm will be having a basil cell spot removed by mohs surgery next week. The thing is though that he went for a check-up and they found this one with a light that measures kelvan temperatures. This particular cancer wasn't even visible yet.

Oh, be careful with your skin, and if you lived in the days before sunscreen, then please get your skin checked over, at least once for a base line.

Julie and I take Harley on an occasional 'girl-date'. In the beginning she was happy to paint toe-nails or go to Claire's and try on pretties, followed by a pretzel. Sometimes we read books at Border's.

We went a couple of times to Olive Garden but that was a little rich. Been trying to do things fun but not especially costly. This time we went to Winco and shopped. Such a BIG store!! So MANY things to sample!! We had a bakery treat at the end and a hamburger on the way home. In the beginning she wasn't too sure that WINCO was a good place for a girl-date, but as we were leaving she said "I wanna live there!"

Had such a good time that she zonked on the way home!

I think that was a good sign.

She wasn't in a hurry to move...

I walked out the front door to go to my car for something and voila...there's a doe. She was as startled as I was but not in a hurry to get up and leave....

So I talked to her as I went to the far side of my car and got what I needed...continued making small talk with her as I walked back in the house.

She was really close and I thought pretty bold to stay there but as I kept an eye on her through the window, she eventually got up and went across the yard to a shadier spot...limping. Apparantly she's been hit by a car and it's painful to move...thus explaining why she wasn't in a hurry to jump up.

Only in North Idaho...

Second Family~~ Second Wind (amended)

These darlings rolled around in the back of the station wagon for years, while I spent afternoons transporting the older boys to things like, scouts, hunters safety, football, baseball, wrestling, piano lessons, you name it!
A friend once asked the kids where they grew up...they shrugged and ran off to play. She said to me in an off stage whisper, "I thought they might say~~Chevy, Chevy, Idaho~~".
When Travis, Kyle, Greg and Cory had all graduated from High School, I should have been able to breathe, but I looked around me at my younger kids who had just finished 6th, 4th and 2nd grades, and realized, I needed to get my "second wind", I would be going through it all again for the next 10 years!
These kids are removed from the "first" family by almost a 6 year gap.
As my mom would say, "Those kids are thick as thieves!"
I love that they are close and make time to see each other every few weeks.
Also am amused that 9 times out of 10 they pose in birth order for pictures.
It's like they are Suzi's protectors. :)
I wish my older kids had gotten to be close to her too, although middle child, Cory, did some, and while both Travis and Suzi lived in Boise for a season, Travis did take her out for a lunch date quite frequently (big smile).

We went to Red Lobster for my birthday for an ultimate feast. yummmmm! My Sweetie had roses brought to our table....many envious wives...many men trying not to notice....human nature is funny!

Roses on my dresser with allllll the baby shoes that represent the largest part of my lifes's journey....

This seems out of place but I am working on a few projects around the house. Kids aren't coming in and out the doors anymore, running up and down the stairs, shaking the house with wrestling, or sneaking out windows in the middle of the night.....

I miss all that....but its time to move on and patch up the house!! So 'this' is the start of my 'recovery'. My attempt to get into the present....but Oh, how I miss the days of

kids and their chaos!

August 26, 2011 is our 40th anniversary!

Who'd have thought? We went to Seattle for the weekend and went to Tillicum Village on /Blake Island (by way of a cruise) and got to enjoy some cultural entertainment and a salmon bake. Met up with Travis and Monica for lunch at the Athenian and strolled all over downtown Seattle by the wharfs. Went to a Mariner vs.Red Sox game and won! Took a poster trying to get Rally Fries but alas the camera 'boys' were only interested in things that 'jiggled'. Seattle has been a favorite getaway since about '77. Been watching the M's forever!We had a wonderful time!

We would have gone to the "Joe" but the water is still so very high. So we went up the North Fork and camped and fished. Caught a few cut-throat and had a very pleasant and relaxing time.....don't know how long it's been since I last camped.....hmmmm......too long.

My Dad...

My dad, had an interesting life. He was born during the twenties spending his childhood in the Great Depression. He went into the Navy during WWII (though toward the end) and married when he got out. He's shown below with his brother Otis and cousin Carl who also were in the military. They had a family gathering when everyone got out. These were probably my Dad's two best friends in the whole world. Early in his life he was diagnosed with Juvenile onset diabetes. It was very unstable and he always had issues chasing blood sugar. Also when I was very little he had tuberculosis and was in the veterans hospital for several months.

Health issues not withsatnding, he worked two jobs as far back as I can remember, and was able to spend a couple of years in Vietnam, during the late 60's. It was not so good having him absent, but I know he loved the escape and the adventure.

Around the same time we took this family pix just before Grandpa died. Having had only two girls, my Dad sorely missed not being able to raise a boy, but as I've said before, he gots boys in spades in the next generation. My sister had 4 and I had 6. The picture on the motorcycle was with my #1 , also the #1 grandchild-grandson. And then in about 1986 his health began a downward spiral and he passed away in March of 1996. If he were here today he'd also be enjoying 30 great grandchildren, mostly boys ~no surprise~

My Dad had a strong testimony and always took his church callings seriously, and especially worked to keep troubled young boys on the straight and narrow, trying to bouy them up through church activities and especially scouting.

At my fathers funeral service he was largely remembered for being a 'brother and friend". People who knew my Dad had a true friend. I'm happy that that is his legacy.

10 things about my Dad:

1. He loved the color red.

2. He loved to hunt and fish.

3. Loved guns.

4. Loved archery. When I was about 8 or so my Dad and I went out to an archery range. And you would go down a trail, shoot at a target, go further down a trail, shoot at a target......kind of in an odd way like plying 9 holes of golf. We came around a bend and too close for comfort we discovered a rattlesnake who wasn't too happy to see us. He began to rattle --Dad took a shot at him with the bow and arrow--rattled more and began to coil---another shot----coiled completely and poised to strike---Dad shot one more time and nailed it to the stack of straw just beyond. I thought I had 'John Wayne' for a Dad !!

5. He loved motorcycles.

6. He loved to watch the Saturday night fights.

7. He loved to read.

8. He loved to talk to people. (To include Ham Radio W7SMF)

9. He always had a joke.

10. He loved photography.

Bonus...He would've seriously loved living today with computers and the digital age, facebook and all of the opportunities for knowledge and social interaction.

It's been 15 years since he passed.

Anyone who knows "Suz" knows how frequently she is 'compelled' to change her hair....usually scissors are involved ! It wasn't something that came with adolescense or tweener years or even grade school. It seems she was born with an itch for scissors. She says that I told her that if you want your hair to grow you should trim it (read 'CUT'). She wasn't very old when she occasionally decided to take a piece of hair now and then. But then one day...being disappointed in the results of her attempts ...she decided to go all out....HOG WILD... and took manicure scissors to the scalp.

So for quite a while she looked like our "POW" camp kid. I bought her several little hats to wear so she wouldn't look like one of the boys. But when it came down to it, what she liked was pantyhose on her head. Having the legs dangle down her back felt like long hair I surmised. So panty hose on her head everywhere we went until she had grown enough hair to feel her own on her back.

Somewhere in that time, Inga (dear dear Inga) bought her a platinum Halloween wig to wear. Oh, she liked that!! Wouldn't even wear a shirt, it felt so good. Many years later she decided to paint a sports bra on this photograph so all posterity wouldn't see her topless.

That's my girl !

This is the little one Greg's family gave me for my birthday 2 years ago. The first Spring after a very mild winter it had 7 blossoms on it.
This year after a bad winter (where it sits taking the full blast of southern exposure), it was half dead with only one beautiful little blossom.
After everyone elses lilacs have bloomed and are past...mine just opened up today.
I guess it was thirsty, we had a torrential downpour all day!
This Fall I'll fashion a windbreak for it and prune it some...hoping for an easier winter on them and more blooms next year.

I only got to see 2 games this year...but this represents the last one.
Greg told Harley to hit a home run and run around all the bases. She wasn't sure exactly what that meant so he said hit the ball really really far and then run around all the bases til you touch homeplate.

OK!!!
So Harley got up to bat and hit the ball really far!! Then she preceded to run to first, and then to second where she nudged the other runner out of the way and ran on to third. It wasn't a home run after all but by golly she was going to run those bases. So very darling!!

My sister, Karen, my only sibling and their clan taken a few weeks ago.

It occurs to me that:

my mom and dad had only 2 girls

my dad never had a son

but my dad did get boys in spades in the next generation. My sis had 4 boys , just 1 girl and I had 6 boys, just 1 girl.

So between us there were 12 grandchildren, 10 of which were boys that dad got to really enjoy (mom too). Now my sisters family has grown to 32 people, and mine is so far at 24. Thats 56 decendants from my parents....pretty nice.

Emily was visiting Aunt 'Toot' (as we call Suzi) about a week ago, and doing her recent favorite thing...baking. Loves to put on an apron and help out in the kitchen.

She's had some special needs issues since birth, being born profoundly deaf, and other issues that have come with that, hand in hand.
She's very very smart and funny and quite a prangster. She's braver than any little girl I know and truly my hero for all the challenges that she just takes in stride.
She's got another issue going on and a team of nuero-surgeons are working with her today.
Anyone who may read this....please say a little prayer for her !!!

It's not true that I hate CdA winters....I just hate them past Valentines Day, or the first day of Spring or past Easter for crying out loud !!

We finally hit 70 degrees yesterday and every flowering tree in the county 'popped'.

Ahhhhhhhhh!!

This is my favorite little tree in the whole area...downtown Coeur d'Alene, on Boise and 3rd street.
Someone grafted pink flowering branches into a tree that blossoms
in white. The white branches reach skyward while the pink branches reach out.

So very beautiful !
Too bad these blossoms don't last as long as winter....
(I know-I know....rave on rat-sh*!)

from the Florida, Jacksonville Mission

where he served faithfully and tirelessly for 2 years.

So very proud of him...

Miss Emily will get her 2nd new cochlear implant on May 27th. (Two surgeries in a one month window!) She is just such a trooper! Emily, you are my hero, along with your Mom and Dad who Heavenly Father hand-picked for you! Oh and I adore your little brother as well! Again, prayers you may offer in her behalf are greatly appreciated. So much power in prayer!

Emily's cochlear implant failed recently and she had to have a second surgery to place a new one from a different company. Her surgeon didn't like the placement of the first and so had to carve away some more skull to move it over, also the incision is much bigger than before because he was 'teaching' and it had to be viewed by several people while he worked. She went to school about 4 days later and has resumed most normal activity. She's quite a trooper !! She won't be hearing for a while, and will hopefully have a second cochlear on the other side in just a few weeks.

Notice the cowboy boots. This girl loves her cowboy boots, always has, probably always will.

skin cancer

Norm had surgeries today for skin cancer; one on his forehead and one on his hand. They believe it was successful and so that is behind us. However there will be more burns and freezes to get it all wrapped up. Happy it wasn't deep enough to be serious.

Moral of this short story: use hats and sunscreen....no telling how long you'll live ! : )

Made a delightful visit with all grandchildren this past week with my hubby and also visited the 'college boys'.

Took some very cute pix, but somehow accidently 'lost' them....

Hoping each of my kids have some as well so I can recover a few to post from our visits. Kids growing like crazy and learning and stuff.

Can't wait to catch up with #1 son--Travis, and Monica, hope to maybe make a date for a Mariner game or something.

Allllmost Spring

March 21st counts to me as the first day of Spring...
We've been having temperatures flirting with 50's and the Sun trying to shine through a little more frequently...but alas, this IS Coeurd'Alene, and we dither in Winter a littttle longer than everyone else.
Yes, tomorrow....snow....no 50's.

But....I surprised my mom with a quick visit, and at her house (4 hours south) the forsythia was in bloom.
Such a nice assurance that Spring really IS coming.

Also went to a Memorial service for one of my HS classmates, who went through life mentally challenged though high funtioning. Such a sweet womam. I'm happy that she is set free in our Lord now.

Her Dad once commented that she was labeled mentally challenged...and his reply was, she lives everyday to it's fullest. It's the rest of us that are mentally challenged.

I know that God restores us to perfection and that is a huge comfort. I do look forward to seeing her on the other side someday. RIP Betty.

Who am I?

I am ...a wife, a mom, grandma, sister and sometimes a friend (but not a very good one)

I want... a retirement to magically appear. (the last ten years or so have been an 'a$$ kicker')

I have... the BEST family a person could ever dream of having.

I wish... I really 'got' manifesting. I'm a little hit and miss with my skill.

I hate... mean-hearted people.

I fear... not always being able to be independent and comfortable.

I hear... ummmm peace. It's a quiet evening around here. March Madness going on downstairs though.

I search... good question...I'll get back to ya on that one.

I wonder... how much faster can life spin?? I mean seriously...I feel like I am at the end of a semester in school and wish I had tried harder.

I regret... my inability to focus better. Not exactly a choice though.

I love... my family, half and halfs (my fam knows this), comfort food, dates with my sweetheart.

I rarely... have my 'sh!t' together....so very abstract-random.

I always... imagine I might one day change myself...(I know...I know....whatever I'm smokin...)

I usually... have a whole committee talking in my head...drives me crazy. Even in my sleep the talk about me comes in the form of a committee. There is usually, no kidding, a wise ass, an idiot, a smart black guy, etc...

I dance....oh, that would be never!

I sing... to favorite oldies, like ones I have burned to CD. ALONE.

I never... seem to achieve as much as I'd like.

I sometimes... get melancholy.

I cry... when I'm happy...when I'm sad...when I'm touched by kindness...

I am not always... sweet but I try to hide those lapses.

I lose... oh, you name it. If I've put it 'away' I'll likely never find it again. Outta sight--outta mind!

I am confused... a good deal of the time, unfortunately. I mistakenly have the habit of looking at things assuming they are complex, but really they are usually a lot simpler than I think they are going to be.

I need... a pedicure....on a regular basis. Makes me happy.

I should... figure out HOW to focus better.

Trying to watch a movie while the adults had their conversations going...

Cars and ...Tom and Jerry.

I had 4 kiddos and 2 banana chairs.

I think I needed a 'banana bench'

or a rocking reclining love-seat.

Everyone wants to be front and center.

Our Logan, Utah family visited and while here we had birthday dinner and cake for the two ladies in the family with March birthdays. Julie on the 8th and Kaylynn on the 20th. It was a most enjoyable day!! Blowing out the cake was a joint effort.

Owen spent considerable time 'posing' for the camera, looking at the pictures and posing again and again. What a hoot. He seems especially born with that See-camera bug (which really started with my Dad..who incidentally was buried 15 years ago today..hope he was watching and enj0ying).

More camera work with Owen. CJ also has the photography bug.

Greysons smiles are so rare and fast...it's a wonder I could capture one...but after having a little birthday cake and ice cream, he was on such a sugar high that I think there were more smiles than usual.

It was the best of times...How was your week-end??

This is the end of my posts regarding "Mormon" dishes ... it has been interesting to me, sorry. They have a common theme of quick. easy, tasty, cheap, and full of opportunity to use food storage (making it easy to keep those items rotated). If you have raised a large family, and tried to keep a food storage, (rotated), you will appreciate what these offer to the busy mom of a large family.

Which brings me to my next "curiosity". It's socialogically interesting to me to see the LDS families of today 'shrink' in size. Whereas I thought avoiding the use of birth control, and multiplying were councel from above ... It gives me pause to wonder ... if God is the same yesterday, today, and forever... why this?.....

The infamous french green bean casserole...

This has become a 'holiday' favorite as evidenced by the tv commercials, and by the stacks of ingredients always on sale at holiday time.

But this is another one of those ubiquitous dishes always on the pot-luck table at LDS functions.

Green Bean Casserole

2 cans french cut green beans
3 oz package of cream cheese
1 can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup
3oz can of french fried onions.

In 2 1/2 qt. dish place drained beans, then chunks of cut up cream cheese spread on beans. Add soup letting it ooze down and top with onions. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

"Heavenly" Rice

Heavenly Rice
3/4 C uncooked rice
1 can crushed pineapple drained
1 pint whipping cream (for die-hards of quality taste)
1 C sugar
1 Lg. package cherry jello
2 teas vanilla

Cook rice in water called for on rice package cooking instructions then drain and rinse in cold water. (drain again, well).
Add pineapple and sugar.
Disolve jello in 1 C hot water and then add to the rice mixture and cool.
When it begins to set, fold in whipped cream until smooth.
Add 2 teaspoons of vanilla and 1/2 C of nuts if desired.
Chill.

The whole world wasn't acquainted with Shepherd's Pie. During the Olympics held in Utah it became apparant that that was a Utah thing.

Below is laregly Rachel Rays' recipe...rewritten in my own words. Wonder when she visited??
SHEPHERDS' PIE
Boil 2# potatoes for 10-12 minutes - drain pour into bowl
combine 2 T sour cream with
1/2 C cream and 1 egg yolk
salt and pepper to taste
mash together til mostly smooth
while potatoes are cooking crumble and brown 1 3/4 # lean hamburger
in large skillet, add chopped carrot and onion and saute for 5 minutes
In another small sauce pan combine 2 T butter and 2 T flour with 1 C beef broth and 2 T worchestershire sauce---thicken into a gravy (abt 1 minute)
Add gravy to meat and vegetables
Turn into a 9 x 13 greased dish
top with potatoes evenly
sprinkle with sweet paprika and top with chopped fresh parsley
Broil until potatoes are evenly browned

How about Chicken Rice Roger?

I was reading Ann Lamott a while back.

She is one of my all time favorites (a generous amount of irreverant humor).

Love her work (mostly).

In one of her 'novels' which seems to be semi-auto-biographical, she talks - as a child - to a friend. They think that all of a sudden in the 60's divorce is becoming prevalant....and she quips to her friend "Maybe it's because of too much Chicken Rice Roger."

I was thinking maybe Chicken Rice Roger might've been one of those "M" recipes but after second thought, it calls for Chicken Breasts which for 'us' is kind of spendy....we are more into hamburger.

Stand-by for more of those "M" recipes.

I'm having fun with this!

PS.

Tried that Chicken Rice Roger today.

Sooooo very easy.

2 1/2 chicken meat (I use chicken breasts boneless)

A small or half onion well minced.

at least 3 oz of mushrooms sliced and cleaned (buy them that way)

1 C rice

2 C chicken Stock

Salt to taste

1 teaspoon of pepper (the pepper lends a great flavor--don't skimp)

just brown the chicken

spray grease a 9 x 13

pour uncooked rice in the bottom

cover with onion and mushrooms

sprinkle pepper

pour stock over all

arrange chicken pieces on top

cover--bake at 350 for 1 1/2 hours

sooo very easy, simple, tasty--

not heavy at all.

Laughing about those "mormon" recipes...like funeral potatoes...

Trying to cut and paste what I've found so the recipe may not come from the cook book pictured...but...

Funeral potatoes are funeral potatoes. I'm quite sure they originated in Utah and there are a million versions....this being one of them.

They are traditionally served at

gatherings after funerals

or "Ward dinners"

or big crowds (read: big mormon family gatherings)

with Ham, rolls, salads and of course Jello.

I just have to be amused by the Mormon kitchen grapevine (hotline)

....it's a marvelous network!!

Use approximately 6 cups diced potatoes (best if they are baked, cooled, peeled and diced)

mix:
1 can cr of chicken soup (or mushroom)
1 stick of butter melted
1 c sour cream
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
1/4 c. finely minced onion
salt & pepper to taste

add potatoes and place in a 9 x 13 baking dish (greased)
Bake at about 350 for 35 - 45 minutes uncovered

Traditionally they are topped with crushed corn flakes tossed in a little butter...adds a nice crunchy texture.

In the very early morning hours of February 15th 1989 John Kelly See was born, the 7th child of our family---6th boy! He weighed nearly 10 # and 22 " long! Looked nothing like a newborn! I had no brothers growing up, not really much male influence in my childhood at all.

But... sometimes... things get 'made-up'to you in spades!

I had 6 sons!

and a daughter, luckily!

and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Travis, Kyle, Greg, Cory, Dan, and Kelly are my six favorite men!

(Well, my hubby too, of course)

I am creative, like to get into stuff with my hands and "make"...

I enjoy all mediums...

have done some painting (with oils)

some sketching, not a great deal though

needlework, I do love counted cross-stitch

and all kinds of endeavors with cloth...

but honestly...

I dislike patterns because

I just don't take direction well.

I 'can' read them I just don't like the control.

I get an idea in my head and I just want to make it happen

and off I go!!

So much happier that way.

Which leads me to the obvious.

Some time ago there was a personality test floating around where you tested

In my mind on a scale of 1-10

I would be about a "-5"

I'm so abstract -random, it's ridiculous !!

like "suck it up girl and pay attention or else"

and I HATE being pushed.

This past summer the See boys (minus Cory) got together for some recreation and memory making with Poppy and two from the next generation...Sage and Gabe (Greg's oldest sons).

It was 1o years ago today that Norm had a PET scan and was pronounced cancer free, after a very difficult year of; cancer diagnosis, treatment plan, surgery, chemo, radiation, more chemo.He was and is very fortunate to have survived the mid-line t-cell lymphoma.

This is also our fortieth wedding anniversary year... the custom made charm says "40"

Danny had the misfortune of being born Christmas Eve Day in 1983, it is cool to celebrate your birthday along with the birthday of our Savior -- but then again he never really got his own day out of it.
